Tributes pour in for Hector Wynter
published: Wednesday | January 1, 2003

LINSTEAD:

THE DEATH of a former chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Hector Wynter, has been described by former deputy leader Enid Bennett, as an unbearable shock to the entire country.

Speaking yesterday at a function in Linstead, Miss Bennett said that Mr. Wynter was dedicated to learning and sought to bring out the best qualities of the people with whom he came in contact.

She said that during his tenure at The Gleaner, Mr. Wynter built up trust and confidence in those who sought his advice and gained for himself the love and respect of those who depended on him for counselling.

General Secretary of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), George Ffyfe said of Mr. Wynter that he could walk with kings and not lose the common touch, "as his life portrayed humility and thoughtfulness for the lives of others."

An outstanding member of the JLP in West Central St. Catherine, Carmen Budhai, in her tribute to Mr. Wynter said, there could hardly be another Jamaican who has left such bold footprints on the sands of time as him.

As the years rolled by, Mrs. Budhai said his work recalled, with pride, honesty of purpose.
