Kidnapped baby found
published: Thursday | January 2, 2003

By David Dunkley, Staff Reporter

Lindsay

A 14-MONTH-OLD baby who was kidnapped from his mother during a car robbery on Wexford Road in Vineyard Town, Kingston on Tuesday night was later found that evening by a passerby who heard him crying and called the police.

The baby, Ajano Lindsay, was found in a Toyota Caldina motorcar in Half-Way Tree, St. Andrew.

"I'm just glad my baby is back and alright," Petrina Lewis, the child's mother told a Gleaner news team who visited the home yesterday morning. "They can take the car but I'm just happy to have my baby."

According to the police, the car in which the baby was found was partly damaged as if it had been in an accident and had on the registration plates which was on Lewis' stolen 1996 grey Nissan Sunny motorcar, which the gunman took.

The police say that Lewis' handbag, which was stolen along with the baby in the car, was also found in the Caldina but they have not returned it to her as they will be checking it for prints.

Recalling the incident, Lewis said she had just returned home and opened her gate when she noticed what seemed like a white Caldina drive up near to her. She said she noticed a man come out the back door of the car and was asking the driver for something.

"I never paid any mind because I thought it was a taxi and the man was asking the driver for his change," she said.

She said the car then drove off and just as she was about to get into the car the man came up to her, pulled a firearm and order her not to go into the vehicle. The man then got into the car and was about to drive off when she asked him to let her take out the baby who was in the rear seat.

"Him point the gun on me and threaten to shoot me and I kinda let go but when he was moving off I still held on to the car and was running beside it," she said adding that she fell and eventually let go of the vehicle and watched as it disappeared from sight. She immediately called the police.

The Vineyard Town police confirmed that just three weeks ago a group of men working on a house next door to her home, was held up and robbed.

The police say from all indications robbery, instead of kidnapping, was the motive for taking the car.
