Waterhouse sink Reno in injury time
published: Monday | January 6, 2003

By Daraine Luton, Staff Reporter

A GOAL inside stoppage time from Demar 'Peelhead' Phillips sparked jubilation among Waterhouse spectators as his team pulled off a stunning come from behind 2-1 win over Reno at Emmet Park, yesterday in Wray & Nephew National Premier league action.

Shane Edwards' 64th minute strike had silenced the sea of yellow and blue clad spectators, but not for long as captain Irvino English converted from the spot 11 minutes later to pull the teams equal before Phillips' winner in the fifth minute of time added.

Phillips told The GLEANER that he "felt very good having scored the decider", then added it was "in the back of my head to find the winning goal".

Reno's technical director, Donald 'Billy' Perkins, was a disappointed man.

"There is nothing to smile about he said. When you lose you lose, there is no buts when you lose. We had a good game, we shouldn't have lost seeing that we led most of the game but that is the way football goes," he added.

According to Perkins, due to "internal squabbles" Reno had to field a "very in experienced team, but we have to work with that sometimes," he said.

Waterhouse's coach, Calvert Fitzgerald, thought his opponents played well in "... a hard fought game".

"Both teams got chances but we made use of ours," added Fitzgerald.

In the JFF Under-21 competition, Waterhouse warmed up in vain as Reno failed to field a team.

Perkins explained their absence, saying "we did not field an Under-21 team because we are having some internal problems".

In the meanwhile, leaders Arnett Gardens won their sixth consecutive game and still lead the second round on 18 points after getting the better of Hazard 2-1 at the Tony Spauldings Complex.

Collin Oldham and Anthony Burke got the goals for Arnett whilst Denzil Watson replied for the Portmore team.

Their nearest rival, Tivoli Gardens, dropped points in this round for the first time, having to contend with a 2-2 away draw against Harbour View. Rafiek Thomas got both goals for Tivoli, moving his tally to nine and his team's to 16.

Rivoli United got by Village 3-1, Constant Spring and Wadadah shared two goals down the middle in a 1-1 draw, whilst the game between Seba and Bull Bay was washed out.
