Hector Wynter: not easily forgotten
published: Tuesday | January 7, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE ALLOW me to send my condolences to the family of late Senator Hector Wynter.

As Editor of The Gleaner in the 1970s, Hector Wynter encouraged my writings on issues of religion and race when both were extremely controversial topics in the Jamaican media and he published my work with such delight that I was inspired to keep writing despite the negatives both he and I sometimes encountered for my articles.

Hector Wynter delighted in extending the discussion boundaries of The Gleaner newspaper, and in his tenure The Gleaner amassed a bumper crop of leading columnists and contributors. At the same time Hector Wynter was an important figure in his own right, influencing not only by the power of his position, but by his own political and intellectual brilliance.

Hector Wynter leaves a journalistic legacy that will not be easily forgotten or excelled.

I am etc.,
