JAMAICANS WHO will be exempt from the new visa regime, are those studying in the UK, who already have permits, persons legally settled in the UK who have not been away more than two years, those with a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode and those who have been previously granted leave to enter or remain in the UK for more than six months and are returning for the same purpose.
Jamaicans can apply for a six-month, two-year, five-year or ten-year visa, at fees ranging from $2,900 to $12,000. UK officials are hoping that the turnaround time, between dropping off forms and picking up the visa, is three working days.
There are also fees covering persons who are returning residents, adults or children, voluntary workers, setting up a business or getting medical treatment.
Mandy Ivemy explained that to lighten hassle, a new system whereby persons can use courier service, DHL Limited, to deliver their fees and documents to the High Commission will be introduced on January 20, 2003.
In addition, prospective travellers can download the application forms off the High Commission's website (www.ukvisas.gov.uk) or contact the High Commission by telephone or via its public enquiries desk, UKvisas.Kingston@fco.gov.uk.
If persons have travelled to the UK within the last five years and complied with UK regulations, they use its "drop box" system, where a slot is provided for persons to leave their properly filled application forms, passport, two passport sized colour photographs, the correct visa fee and supporting documentation.
