Taxi operators complain of police brutality
published: Monday | January 13, 2003

PORTMORE, St. Catherine

SEVERAL TAXI operators who ply between Spanish Town, Kingston, Crossroads and Half-Way Tree, are upset with what they say is the brutal manner in which they are being treated by the Spanish Town Police said they are seeking immediate audience with Commissioner of Police Francis Forbes to air their grievances.

The over 200 operators who are expected to stop working at 9 am on Monday January 13 said they cannot continue to be physically abused by four known police officers from Spanish Town and despite several complaints to the head of the St. Catherine North police division, the problem continues. Head of the City to City Taxi Association, Michael Reid told The Gleaner on Sunday January 12, that several of his members are now seeking medical attention from bruises inflicted by the police officers.

"We cannot continue to have respect for law officers who treat us like this. We, cannot support them, we cannot continue to work with them," Mr. Reid said. He said the operators are expected to meet on the Mandela Highway in the vicinity of the Ferry Police Station to devise a plan to meet with the Commissioner of Police.

We will not be demonstrating at this time because we believe the Commissioner will meet with us and hear our grouses, Reid explained.
