Patterson to address labour industry conference today

PRIME MINISTER, PJ Patterson will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the Programme for the Promotion of Management Labour Co-operation's (PROMALCO) 2nd Caribbean Enterprise Forum today at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel at 5:30 p.m.

He will speak to international delegates, trade unionists, local executives and other key players in the labour industry about "Getting Ready for Global Competition: Challenges for Political, Business and Labour Leadership". Among the conference participants will be Mr. Tom Moorhead, Deputy Under-secretary for International Affairs, United States Department of Labour who will give opening remarks during the ceremony.

The opening ceremony kicks off a three-day conference from January 23-25, bringing together labour officials addressing issues affecting the industry such as the risks and benefits of global competition. Other topics include the role of trade unions in enterprise transformation, competitiveness and job security; productivity partnership challenges in the Caribbean and the impact of HIV/AIDS on competitiveness and productivity.

PROMALCO is a programme developed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) through is Caribbean sub-regional office and has as its main objectives facilitating collaboration and co-operation between Social Partners. This partnership seeks to build industrial democracy and the optimal use of human resources, unlock the potential of enterprises for innovation and global competition through work place partnership and seeks respect for fundamental workers rights.
