THE EDITOR, Sir:
Thanks to the successful staging of Reggae Marathon 2002, Jamaica has been receiving some much needed positive publicity from the international marathon community.
Running Network, a Chicago-based publication writes: Reggae Marathon is "one of the best around and well worth the trip. The course is beautiful. It follows the coast in many areas and ventures through the lush green inland near smaller towns north of Negril. Race volunteers are friendly and plentiful, handing out the necessary supplements every mile along the course. Reggae music, played along the course, motivates runners to keep their energy levels up throughout the race".
Comment from Marathonguide.com: "The race is outstanding! It was my 46th marathon and ranks among the best. I ran the second annual event and found the course to be mostly flat; scenic; well supported with plenty of cold water; Gatorade and volunteers at every mile; and the most friendly spectators and supporters around. Honestly, the crowd-support is sparse in some areas but the cows and goats grazing along the side of the road and the scenic views of the ocean and the inland hills make for beautiful scenery to fill the gaps. Race organisers left no detail unattended to and the finish line stays open for the very last runner. Reggae music along the course will also motivate you. Enjoy the race and a fantastic getaway to Jamaica".
Reggae Marathon is an experience that captures the best of Jamaica, and has in just two years established itself as Jamaica's premier tourist event. It showcases many positive aspects of Jamaica while promoting and encouraging a healthy lifestyle to Jamaicans. It is now confirmed as a major event on the marathon circuit worldwide.
An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the incredible contribution of the police, volunteers, the exceptional medical team, the Jamdammers Running Club, the JAAA, our sponsors, The Jamaica Tourist Board, the JHTA Negril Chapter and others too numerous to mention here. Thanks again to you all.
Plans for Reggae Marathon 2003 are already in motion and with dedication and hard work, will be a bigger and better event, for runners and spectators alike.
I am, etc.,
