The cry of the Town Clerk
published: Monday | January 27, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Town Clerk, Mr. Errol Greene, and the staff of the KSAC for the tremendous effort at cleaning up the streets of commercial downtown Kingston. Humbly, the KSAC has taken on the role of 'scape-goat' for the deplorable condition and the illegal vending that has been occurring in that section of Kingston for decades, and despite obstacles and a lack of resources they have risen to the challenge.

There is still much to be accomplished, and it is hoped that the relevant authorities will give the KSAC their full 100 per cent support.

Finally, in reference to your article dated January 19, 2003, entitled: 'Don't blame us for the poor performance', I offer the following suggestions to Mr. Greene:

1) The Jamaica Magazine, a programme of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), is quite apt at keeping the general public aware of the happenings and events across the island, and covers a wide range of issues. Perhaps you can consider this forum, which includes both radio and television, to highlight the work being done by the KSAC.

2) In addition to strengthening your public relations department, the KSAC can also enhance public awareness by staging an annual expo or exhibition, perhaps in collaboration with other Local Government agencies.

3) Seek clarity, and if necessary, sanction by law, with respect to the duties and responsibilities of the KSAC, so as to ensure that there are no duplication or cross-functions being carried out by the Corporation or any other agency - in your case the National Works Agency.

Keep up the good work.

I am, etc.,

E. LAYNE-McDONALD

Old Harbour, St. Catherine
