Vendor removal hits snag
published: Monday | January 27, 2003

SANTA CRUZ, St. Elizabeth:

THE POLICE in Santa Cruz have resumed their programme to remove illegal vendors from the busy streets of the town here, but Inspector Claude Smith, who is in charge of the Santa Cruz Police Station, said lack of vehicles and insufficient personnel were preventing them from carrying out their duties.

The station is served by one jeep and an old Toyota Corolla motor vehicle. Inspector Smith said they recently got back the services of the jeep assigned to that station because it has been in the garage for several months.

He said that as part of the measures to monitor traffic congestion in the town, "we have put in place a one-way system at one of the plazas, where the taxis that ply the Black River route are parked, but we don't have a police officer to be placed there to monitor the situation."

Inspector Smith said there was a system in place, but it was difficult to monitor because "we are short of personnel."
