Five double murders in 29 days
published: Thursday | January 30, 2003

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

TWO MEN were gunned down in the Woodford Park area of Kingston yesterday, the fifth double-murder over the past 29 days.

The latest victims were dentified as Dwayne Nicholson, 17, of Moore Street and Emelio Rodgers, alias "Bimbo" of Woodford Street, Kingston 4.

Allegations are that about 12:30 p.m., the youngsters were buying lunch at a shop on Dames Road, Woodford Park, when they were attacked by a group of gunmen who shot them several times.

Nicholson's step-father, Sylvester Sutton, said his stepson, who is a former Jamaica College student, had started a job yesterday at a nearby auto-mechanic store.

Yesterday's killings pushed the number of murders since the start of the year to 62. Three of the five double murders took place between Sunday night and yesterday, in Kingston and St. James.

When several reporters visited the home of Mr. Rodgers, his mother and other relatives were distraught with grief and were barely able to speak.

The killer(s) are said to be from a nearby area in the community.

While details of the circumstances relating to the killing were still sketchy up to late last night, word among residents was that there has been a long-standing dispute between men from the Anderson Road area, which is known as "Trap" and men from the Moore Street area.

As the country's murder toll continues to rise, police records up to January 26 show that most of the violent killings have occurred in St. Catherine North, which includes the Spanish Town area.

St. Andrew Central which includes the Papine, Half-Way Tree and August Town area, along with St. James, St. Andrew South and Clarendon are next with six killings each. West and Central Kingston follow behind jointly on four. St. Andrew North has three.

Westmoreland and St. Catherine South are next with two each. They are followed by Kingston East, Trelawny and St. Thomas with one each. Meanwhile St. Mary, Portland, Hanover, St. Ann, Manchester and St. Elizabeth have a clean slate.
