A DISTRICT constable attached to the Denham Town Police Station in West Kingston was picked out in an identification parade on Tuesday as one of several policemen alleged to be involved in an extortion racket.
The ID parade took place at the Half-Way Tree Police Station, St. Andrew, on Tuesday. He is the fifth policeman and the third constable from the Denham Town station who has been arrested in connection with the alleged multimillion dollar extortion racket involving a Jacks Hill resident.
Last week, acting on intelligence, the police staged a sting operation to intercept four policemen and a civilian in the Jacks Hill area of St. Andrew.
Allegations are that the men were on their way to the house of a prominent Jacks Hill resident from whom they had demanded US$2.5-million. Police reports said the men were posing as members of the Jamaica Fugitive Apprehension Team (JFAT).
The men, who allegedly had false arrest warrants, had reportedly told the Jacks Hill resident that he was wanted by prosecutors in the United States and that if he did not comply with their demands, they would hand him over to the US authorities.
In the meantime, the ID parades that were scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, for the four policemen behind bars, had to be postponed because of insufficient police personnel to participate in the ID parades.
