Reclaiming the nation's capital
published: Thursday | February 6, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM in complete agreement with your editorial today (February 4) concerning the revitalisation of downtown Kingston. Getting the nation's capital back on track to be the premier metropolis of the Caribbean must be paramount.

Kingston is the cultural, economic and administrative capital of Jamaica, and must be brought back to life, so that Jamaicans both at home and abroad can be proud of the city. The economic benefits of a clean, safe, and enjoyable city I am sure would quickly repay he cost of the revitalisation effort.

The Gleaner and other business and social interests must keep up the pressure on the Government to do the job. If local businesses and the Government cannot finance the project, then foreign enterprises should be invited to do the job. There is a lot of money lying around in places like New York, Toronto and Saudi Arabia waiting to be put to use.

I am etc.,

A. LENNOX
