published: Friday | February 14, 2003

By Nagra Plunkett, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

TWO PERSONS were killed and six others injured in a motor vehicle accident along the Sign main road in St. James on Wednesday afternoon.

The dead persons have been identified as Donald Vassell, 42 of Adelphi and Constantine Crooks, a 54-year-old resident of Orange district, two St. James addresses.

The accident involved a motor car and a minibus, which were both transporting passengers. The Gleaner has learnt that the driver of the bus is hospitalised and will be charged in connection with the deaths.

The reports are that about 1 p.m. Vassell was driving his Toyota Corolla motor car, registered PA7280, along the Sign main road, with five persons including Crooks aboard. On reaching a section of the roadway, the vehicle collided with a bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The passengers in Vassell's car and two others from the bus were taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital for injuries they sustained in the crash. Vassell and Crooks were pronounced dead and the others treated. The Mount Salem police are investigating.
