Review the Spelling Bee
published: Saturday | March 1, 2003
THE EDITOR, Sir: CONGRATULATIONS TO Trudy-Ann McLeary and her coach, the Rev. Glen Archer, for yet another victory in our annual Spelling Bee Championship. The Reverend has now become a force to reckon with.
Although elated by the success achieved, I have mixed feelings about the selection of our entrants. Chronologically, and from the standpoint of maturity, I think the primary/preparatory participants are at a distinct disadvantage. Children who have entered high school should not be allowed to compete with the children from the primary/pre-paratory level. If they must perform, then a plan should be in place for those who spell well and are runners-up to the champion. These children should be considered prospective entrants at the high school level.
In reference to my letter published in The Gleaner of February 19, 2000, asking the Reverend some pertinent questions, so far only one of the questions have not been answered. That being, your intention to train your colleagues in doing a better job of preparing prospects for the Scripps Howard Championship.
I am, therefore, imploring Reverend Archer not to let his expertise in preparing children for the championship die with him. Instead he should offer these to other teachers who so desire.
I sincerely wish Trudy-Ann and Reverend Archer every success as they continue to prepare for the coveted Scripps Howard Competition.
