Jamaica in control
published: Sunday | March 2, 2003

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:

JAMAICA HELD the upper-hand over Guyana at the end of the second day of their fifth round 2003 Carib Beer Series match-up at Bourda yesterday.

At the close of play, the home side was 70 for two after the Jamaicans were dismissed for 387 just after tea. The not out batsmen are Lennox Cush (11) and Travis Dowlin (six).

Experienced Jamaican captain Robert Samuels slammed 85 to become the third player to pass the half-century mark, following 95 and 74 respectively from Brenton Parchment and Leon Garrick, but like the openers, virtually threw away a great opportunity of registering a century on a placid Bourda pitch.

The day also saw the emergence of an unlikely hero in part-time legspinner Sewnarine Chattergoon, who wrecked the Jamaican lower-order to finish with the remarkable figures of four for nine in 6.4 overs.

Chattergoon was however not so lucky with the bat when Guyana started their reply, offering a simple catch to David Bernard Jnr at mid-off off a well-flighted delivery from off-spinner Gareth Breese after sharing an opening stand of 42 with the adventurous Krishna Arjune.

Breese, who ended the day with 2-25, also sent Arjune (38) on his way, via an injudicious stroke 12 runs later, the right-hander swinging a delivery outside the off-stump to Bernard at wide mid-on.

Arjune, who started in a rush, hit six fours in 108 minutes off 81 balls.

Earlier, Samuels, who was forced to come out late on the opening day following the demise of night-watchman Ryan Cunningham, took some 43 minutes to open his account but once he did, took heavy toll on the Guyanese bowlers, singling out legspinner Mahendra Nagamootoo for special attention.
