Citrus workers end strike
published: Thursday | March 6, 2003

LINSTEAD:

WORKERS AT the Jamaica Citrus Growers Limited (JCGL) plant in Bog Walk, St. Catherine, ended their five-day strike and resumed work starting with the 6:00 a.m. shift on Tuesday.

The resumption followed an agreement reached at a meeting on Monday at the Ministry of Labour involving the management and the National Workers Union (NWU), which represents the 120 workers at the company. The workers are seeking pay increases for the 2002-2004 period. The talks are expected to resume tomorrow.

JCGL is one of the major suppliers of citrus and citrus concentrates for the international and local markets. According to a member of the company's management team, the value of its production is several million dollars monthly.

The strike action affected the delivery of fruit to the company as citrus left on the compound during the strike action rotted.
