THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS a blessing to have a public defender in our country, Jamaica.
During November 2002, Transport Authority personnel along with Police Officers from Area 2 Headquarters seized and impounded my motor vehicle for 21 days, stating that I don't have a road licence.
At the time of seizure the renewed road licence that is due to expire March 2003 was not present in the vehicle, the receipt stamped and signed by a Transport Authority personnel at the said St. Mary branch was produced to show that the necessary fees were paid.
I made over 30 telephone calls to the aforementioned and the Kingston branch office of the Transport Authority, I spoke to eight different persons (front desk clerks, manager, supervisors and operation manager). I was unable to get back my vehicle; I was so frustrated.
Thank God for that blessed day when I met and spoke to the Public Defender, Mr. Howard Hamilton, about the difficulties I was having in getting back my vehicle. He advised me to write a letter to him. After doing so, within two days; my vehicle was released without any fees paid (wrecker and pound).
God really does answer prayers. My family and I would like to express thanks to the Public Defender, Mr. Howard Hamilton and his competent staff for handling my matter in such a professional way.
I recommend anyone with similar or any other problem to contact the Public Defender's office. I am sure they will receive assistance.
I am, etc.,
