Late penalty puts Arnett in semis

A PENALTY converted in the 99th minute by former national player Fabian Davis gave Arnett Gardens an exciting sudden-death extra-time 3-2 win over Village United in the Federation Cup Knock Out competition at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex last night.

Davis's strike was the icing on the cake but the ingredients in two beautiful strikes from Kevin Wilson in the 46th and 67th minutes would have been more filling. Fabian Dawkins gave Village the lead in the 30th minute and Kirk Hendricks pulled them level in the 92nd minute.

With the win Arnett Gardens advanced to the semi-final of the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) competition along with Harbour View, Rivoli and Hazard United.

"This is the only trophy that we have not won and all the players are looking forward to it," said a visibly pleased Arnett Gardens coach Jerome Waite after the game. "We now head to the semi-finals and we will take it from there," he continued.

On the game itself Waite said: "It was a good game and a good victory for us. I was just a bit surprised by their concentration. It faltered in the latter part of the game."

Village's Geoffrey Maxwell who did a stint as Arnett Gardens coach felt that his team could have sewn up the victory from the first half. "I thought that in the first half we could have led 2-0 but that is football and congratulations to Arnett Gardens.

"I think it was a good fight by my team. We played without five of our better players but still gave a good account of ourselves," he concluded.

After a first half in which they had the better of play except in the final third of the field Arnett Gardens started the second half with a blistering pace. Stung by Dawkins' strike in the 30th minute which resulted from a rebound off a Daniel Ricketts shot, the 'Junglists' raided the Village goal area.

They did not have to wait long to find the equaliser. Less than a minute after the resumption Davis headed down a cross into the left side of the 18-yard box for Wilson. Spotting an opening, Wilson leaned to the left and spanked the ball into the inside of the right upright beating a measured Ricketts.

The partisan crowd showed their appreciation for the strike. They were to outdo that later when Wilson scored an even better second goal. His free-kick from about 40-yards was struck firmly with the right boot and took a deflection of Ricketts who might have taken a better position in the goal.

Just when the curtains were about to be pulled on Village, Kevin Wilson handled the ball in the 18-yard box and the fearless referee Courtney Campbell pointed to the spot without hesitation. Hendricks duly scored.

In sudden death extra-time the pressure on Village's goal continued. In the 97th minute Davis had a solid effort blocked by Ricketts. Michael Allen who had just come on as a substitute had a solid drive on goal which was played back out and according to Campbell was handled.

Davis did the rest.
