KINGSTON COLLEGE and St. Jago's girls took top honours at last Saturday's National Hurdles and Field events Championships held at the G.C. Foster College.

In the boys section Kingston College scored 117 points to take top honours. They were followed by Calabar 95, St. Jago 90.5, UTECH/MVP 66, JC 60, Bridgeport 57, G.C. Foster 26.5, Ardenne 21, Calabar Extension 16, St. George's 15, Munro 14, Campion 6, UWI 5.5, Papine 2.5, Camperdown two and Winston Jones one.

St. Jago girls with 148.5 points topped the female section. They were followed by St. Andrew High 132, Vere Technical 107, Holmwood 66.5, Wolmer's 34.5, Immaculate 32.5, St. Hugh's 29.5, Alpha 27.5, Bridgeport 16, Meadowbrook 14, Manchester 13, Camperdown two and Campion two.

Champions St. Jago High who have had a quiet season so far came out firing over the weekend as their athletes showed that they are peaking at the right time. The girls from Monk Street were devastating in the long jump as they won in three classes.

In the Class 1 long jump, Nadina Marsh, who fell in the 100m hurdles after leading for a long way, captured the event with a leap of 5.95m. Vere's Technical Keasha Brown finished second with 5.84m and St. Jago's Andrea Linton was third with 5.61m.

In Class 2, Carifta Under 17 champion Tamara Francis won with 5.84m with St. Andrew High's Annakaye Campbell, 5.67m, for second and Holmwood Technical's Rosemarie Whyte taking third with 5.55m.

Janelle McLeod captured the third title for St. Jago with an outstanding mark of 5.69m in Class 3. St. Andrew High's Dicoda Waugh was second with 5.26m. Wolmer's Sashagaye Henry, 5.24m, was third.

St. Andrew High's Samantha Williams stopped the St. Jago sweep by winning the Class 4 event with 5.20m. Vere Technical's Tallisa Grant (5.01m) and St. Andrew Analise Nembhard (5.00m) took second and third.

Grant came within a whisker of the Class 4 70m hurdles record. The only competitor in Class 4 for Vere, Grant won the event in 10.91 seconds, just outside the old mark of 10.90 seconds. St. Jago's Yanique Haye (11.02) and Alpha Shermaine Willams (11.14) took second and third respectively.

Like they did at Carifta Trials last week it was a ding-dong battle in the Class 3 80m hurdles between St. Jago's Natasha Ruddock and St. Andrew High's Tavia Burke. In the end it was Ruddock who prevailed in winning the event in 11.44 to Burke's 11.49 for second as Bridgeport's Taneisha Francis took third in 11.49.

Immaculate's Monique Morgan was out of class in the Class 2 100m hurdles as showing excellent technique throughout she won easily in 13.99, ahead of Vere Technical's Indira Spence (14.73) and St. Andrew High's Latoya Heath (14.75).

The expected big clash in Class 1 lost some of its lustre when favourite Nadina Marsh of St. Jago fell at the eighth hurdle when holding a comfortable lead. Vere's Keasha Brown won in 13.82.

Holmwood Technical Petagaye Beckford was a double winner taking the shot put and triple jump open events.

In the triple jump she won with 12.39m, ahead of St. Jago's Petagaye O'Connor (12.20m) and Tamelca Lewis who competed unattached with 11.98m.

Beckford threw 12.20m in the shot put to upstage St. Hughs' Nadia Alexander 11.67m and Alpha's Jerrine Foster 11.06m respectively.

Alpha's Peaches Roache who equalled the National Junior high jump record at the Carifta Trials recently, took the Class 1 event with 1.80m ahead of St. Jago's Michelle Williamson 1.70m.

Favourite Kimani KIrton was absent in the boys Class 1 shot put but KC still took top spot with Fabian Morgan. Morgan with 16.84m won easily ahead of Calabar Nicardo Walters (15.98) and St. Jago's Ricardo Page 15.74m.

Page, however, turned the tables on Morgan in the shot put. Unbeaten this season, Page threw 52.15m. Morgan was second on 49.85m with Shawn Haughton of Calabar taking bronze with 48.80m.

KC swept the high jump events. In Class 1, Carlos Mattis 2.00m won ahead of team-mate Doraine Coley 1.95m and Calabar's Jermaine Jackson 1.90m.

Carifta under 17 champion Alain Bailey took the honours in Class 2 with 2.00m as Manchester High's David Edwards took second with 1.95m and Darren Daley (KC) clearing 1.90m for third.

Omari Dooke ended the sweep for the North Street-based school by winning with 1.85m. He was followed by Calabar's Andrew Riley 1.75m and Campion's Chad Brown, 1.65m.

Mattis recorded a double victory as he returned to take the triple jump open with 15.03m. Bridgeport's Omar James 14.62m and Kingston College's Wasim Walker 14.02m took second and third.

UTECH/MVP's Gregory Lyttle won the 400m hurdles event easily. Looking out of class, Lyttle took the event in 52.00. St. Andrew Technical's Isa Phillips (52.9) finished second with third going to UTECH/MVP's Shane Nugent in 53.3.
