Taylor rocks Trinidad
published: Monday | March 10, 2003

Taylor

PORT OF SPAIN, CMC:

YOUNG JAMAICA pacer Jerome Taylor, in only his third first-class match, ripped through Trinidad and Tobago's batting line-up with a five-wicket haul and kept Jamaica in charge on the third day of their sixth-round Carib Beer 2003 Cricket Series match at the Queen's Park Oval yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago, trailing the Jamaicans by 114 runs on first innings, were an unsteady 195 for six at the close with Lendl Simmons not out on 23 and Dave Mohammed on one.

The 18-year-old Taylor rocked the home side by grabbing five for 42 off 14 overs on an eventful day at the famous Test ground.

Jamaican middle-order batsman Gareth Breese (98) and the home side's Andy Jackson (90) narrowly missed hundreds and tricky left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed logged his first five-wicket effort as the Jamaicans piled up 332 all out in response to Trinidad and Tobago's 218.

From an overnight 285 for six, the Jamaicans, unseated as Cup holders when new champions Barbados registered a rapid three-day win over the Leeward Islands early yesterday, stretched their first innings to within half-an-hour of lunch, while adding 47 runs.

Breese and Nehemiah Perry posted a 54-run stand in a seventh-wicket partnership that ended when pacer Theodore Modeste had Perry - chasing a wide delivery -- caught behind by Simmons for a well-played 40, studded with six boundaries.

As Breese was nearing a second first-class century, Darren Powell stuck around for 13 before edging an out-swinger from pacer Marlon Black to wicket-keeper Simmons at 318 for eight, and 19 runs later, Mohammed had Ryan Cunningham (4) also caught behind from an under-edge.
