Time to wake up!
published: Tuesday | March 11, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FREQUENT CRITICISM of the government may give some the impression that the critic has a grudge against the government or functionaries within it. There may be some validity to this charge, but those who make it must seriously ask whether the criticisms are just and whether they have any foundation in fact. The fact is that the kind of corrupt governance that we have in Jamaica at the present moment is like a factory producing its fair share of reasons that attract criticism.

What must one make, for example, of the number of PNP consultants working for the Government? How do you respond to the Prime Minister's approach to this problem when he simply names another committee to investigate this matter? Does the Prime Minister not know what is happening under his very nose? If he doesn't then it is quite clear that his "friends" in the PNP are simply using him as a "boops," feeding on his perceived legendary loyalty to them while at the same time sullying any possibility of a credible place for him in the history books. Let us not forget that this happened in the earlier furniture scandal and more recently in the fat salary scandal which is yet to be resolved.

The fact is, Mr. Prime Minister, that it is the people of Jamaica who ultimately pay the price for this corrupt use of the people's resources. Those who criticise may very well have your best interests and those of Jamaica at heart more than those who are disposed to corruption and who slap you on the back, make you feel good, while at the same time pushing the country over the cliff. Is it too late to wake up?

I am etc.,

Rev. RALSTON NEMBHARD
