George Phang shot in drive-by
published: Friday | March 14, 2003

GEORGE PHANG, 47, Kingston businessman, Arnett Gardens area leader and manager of its football club, was in "critical condition" in the Kingston Public Hospital last night after being wounded in a drive-by shooting in the community.

Supt. James Forbes, head of the Constabulary Communication Network, said that around 9:30 a group of men were playing dominoes at premises near the intersection of Thompson and Septimus streets, Arnett Gardens, when a white Toyota Corolla car drove up.

Men in the car then opened fire at the domino players, their bullets hitting Mr. Phang, nicknamed 'Pepper', and another man, identified only as Mark Manning.

They were sped to KPH where at press time, Mr. Phang and Mr. Manning were being treated.

Mr. Phang's condition was described as "critical but stable"; Mr. Manning's condition was described as being "less serious".

A large crowd of residents from Arnett Gardens ('Concrete Jungle') and surrounding communities, including Hannah Town, and a large contingent of police in numerous patrol cars descended on the hospital and its environs after the men were admitted there.
