published: Saturday | March 15, 2003

JAMAICA'S defending champion, Juliet Campbell, will run in today's final of the women's 200 metres on the second day of the 2003 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England.

Campbell clocked a season-best 22.84 seconds for second place in semi-final heat two won in a world leading 22.31 by American Michelle Collins. Semi-final one was won in 22.49 by pre-meet favourite Muriel Hurtis of France while the third semi-final went to Russia's Anastasiya Kapachinskaya in 22.76.

Sandie Richards and Ronetta Smith both finished second in their respective first round heats to advance to today's semi-finals of the women's 400m.

Smith was second in heat three in a season-best 53.66, beaten by Britain's Catherine Murphy (51.89). Richards, 52.46, played second fiddle to Germany's Grit Breuer, 52.10, in heat five.

Jamaica's Danny McFarlane and Davian Clarke crashed out of the 400m in the heats. Clarke was disqualified while McFarlane failed to finish. The fastest qualifier was Britain's Daniel Caines who won heat one in 45.85.

Jamaica's Lindel Frater and Dwight Thomas both failed to reach the final of the 60m as American Justin Gatlin and Ukrainian Zhanna Block took gold in the men's and women's sprints respectively.

Frater was fourth in semi-final heat one in 6.69 while Thomas was last of the eight runners in semi-final three in 7.33.

Gatlin took gold in 6.46 ahead of Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis who won silver in a national record 6.53. Briton Jason Gardener (6.55) third.

Block ran a world leading time of 7.04 to add the indoor title to the world 100 metres outdoor crown she won in Edmonton in 2001. Americans Angela Williams, 7.16, and Torri Edwards, 7.17, took silver and bronze.

High jumper Germaine Mason and triple jumper Tricia Smith failed to advance to the finals. Mason could not clear the opening height of 2.20m while Smith's 13.66m was not good enough get her into the medal round.

In the women's 3,000m Korene Hinds clocked 9:15.18 to place 10th in heat two and also failed to advance. Ethiopia's Meseret Defar was the fastest qualifier with 8:49.80.
