Jamaicans alerted to avoid Gulf
published: Tuesday | March 18, 2003

FOREIGN AFFAIRS officials yesterday advised Jamaicans residing in Iraq or any of the Gulf states to closely monitor developments in the region against the background of impending war.

An advisory, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade yesterday, said: "Jamaicans are further advised to make the necessary arrangements to ensure their personal safety and generally to avoid travel to the region."

Officials at the Ministry told The Gleaner yesterday that the Government was currently trying to determine how many Jamaicans were living in Iraq and the Gulf States, with a view to determine whether it could offer further assistance.

The Ministry is requesting that all Jamaican citizens in that region register immediately with any of the following Jamaican Missions: Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the United Nations; Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the Specialised Agencies of the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland; and Jamaican High Commission in London, England.

They can also register at the Embassy of Jamaica, Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany; Haim Gueron, Honorary Consul for Jamaica, Jamaican Consulate, Tel Aviv, Israel; Faud Kattan, Honorary Consul for Jamaica, Jamaican Consulate, Amman, Jordan; Khalil Zantout Honorary Consul for Jamaica, Jamaican Consulate Beirut, Lebanon.

The Ministry also called on members of the public who have contact details for Jamaican living in the Persian Gulf to get in touch with the Protocol Department in the Ministry at 926-4220-8.
