Nettleford to get honorary degree from Oxford
published: Tuesday | March 25, 2003

Nettleford

OUTGOING VICE-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Rex Nettleford, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree by the University of Oxford on July 3 of this year.

Professor Nettleford, who is expected to retire next year, will be one of four Rhodes Scholars from around the world receiving the award in July. The other three to be honoured are, Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia; David Woods, Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, South Africa; and John Brademas, former U.S. Congressman and President Emeritus of New York University.

The ceremony will take place in the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, England.

The Rhodes Scholarship has been described as perhaps the most prestigious graduate scholarship in the world. It was established in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, described as the builder of British South Africa. Over 70 scholarships are awarded annually; one scholarship is available to Jamaica and two to the Commonwealth Caribbean each year.
