THE EDITOR, Sir:
LIME CAY is owned by the government and people of Jamaica for the benefit of the people and not for the benefit of one or small group of entrepreneurs who see this merely as a money making opportunity.
It has been brought to my attention as a Sunday regular at Lime Cay, that persons have applied for and have been granted a lease to operate the cay as a private entity and the plan is clearly to exploit this little island and make it a tourist destination. This prospect is a nightmare for some of us as we would like Lime Cay to remain primarily a place for Jamaicans and not for tourists. Otherwise, why would plans include lifeguard towers, labelling of plants, toilets and a floating jetty. We have lived without these 'conveniences' for years and why is it that we, as Jamaicans, should not be able to continue going to our little refuge without someone charging us to set foot on the shore. In principle NO ONE should be given the right to Lime Cay and we should have the right to enjoy that little part of Jamaica as if it belonged to us and not to any individual or group.
There is a well known saying, "If it ain't broke, why fix it! "Not only is it not 'broke' but it has been working well for so many years and all of us who go there are happy to have it remain the same...natural and unspoiled. The Morris family who have worked so hard over the years to provide us with good food, drink and entertainment is what Lime Cay is all about. We look forward to seeing them whenever we go there. You don't just go there without going to say hi to Tony and Donovan and Broderick...and the rest of the crew who all have the interest of the cay at heart.
I am therefore appealing to everyone who frequents Lime Cay to make a case to the authorities to rescind this lease agreement in the interest of the people and if it comes to that, take legal action to prevent anyone from taking charge of what should remain a beach with free access to all.
I am etc.,
