THE BUREAU of Special Investigations (BSI) is to look into allegations that two policemen, held in Westmordland on Sunday night, could have been part of a recent armed robbery in Coral Gardens, St. James.
Police sources told The Gleaner that the two policemen fit the description of persons who went to the upscale community and staged the robbery after identifying themselves as policemen. Jewellery and a large amount of money, comprising United States and Jamaican currencies, were reportedly taken from the complainant(s). The officers were held last weekend after they were found searching a house in the Negril area, where a robbery had taken place.
Head of the Area One Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Linton Latty, said on Tuesday that the BSI would be investigating the incident in Westmoreland, as well as the robbery in St. James.
"It (BSI) will be looking into this robbery also and if needs be, they (the officers) will be placed on identification parade," said ACP Latty.
CAUGHT SEARCHING HOUSE
The two cops were taken into custody at a house in Negril where they were seen searching the premises. It is said that the corporal and the constable, both attached to the St. James Police Division, went to the house and told the occupant that they were carrying out an operation.
Information is that the Westmoreland police went to investigate reports that five gunmen were seen at the house. On their arrival, two men were seen sitting inside a white Nissan Sunny motor car outside the residence. The two policemen were discovered inside the house searching it. They then identified themselves as policemen and showed their Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) identification cards as proof.
The two civilians were later pointed out as two of six men that held up the occupant of the same house at gunpoint and stole a large amount of cash and a cellular phone last Friday. The policemen were subsequently escorted to the Bethel Town Police Station lock-up where they are being held.
