Becoming self-sufficient

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE CARIBBEAN has once again been warned to get on the bandwagon of the Superpower, United States (SUS), or else! Putting aside the many arguments that can and will emanate from this "warning", Jamaicans may also look at the positive gains.
We could take this opportunity to become more independent, i.e. to provide food and raw materials for ourselves. Michael Manley's doctrine may well come to pass. Indeed, if push come to shove, and the SUS retaliates by not providing aid in any form to the Caribbean, or to a lesser extent, cut back tremendously the aid provided, then we are left on our own.
What do we do? Yes, we can resort to other areas to provide for us. However, this is an opportunity to take advantage of a disastrous situation that is happening in the Middle East.
This unfortunate war can be an asset in our favour. This might sound harsh, and it probably is, but the reality still remains. The prolongation of this war can only be to the detriment of the world including the SUS. What can we do to preserve the economy and social standing of this little rock? Become self-sufficient.
