published: Wednesday | April 16, 2003

DIGICEL JAMAICA and Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) walked away with awards for Entrepreneurial Leadership/Innovation and Best Chamber Member Company at the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) annual dinner and awards ceremony at the Hilton Kingston Hotel last Saturday.

Digicel was recognised for demonstrating extraordinary leadership and innovation in business over the past year, characterised by top performance in ISO compliance, marketing and business expansion, fiscal management for sustainable growth and attracting investment.

VMBS was honoured for demonstrating the highest levels of sector performance and best practices across a range of criteria, including corporate leadership and citizenship, production, product and service quality, and marketing innovation to meet 21st century demands.

The ceremony, chaired by psychiatrist Dr. Aggrey Irons, also saw awards for "Most Outstanding Individual Chamber Member" going to Anthony Chang, past-president of the JCC; "Best Parish Chamber" going to the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce, "Individual Community Service Award" to Dr. Lloyd Cole, and the "Environmental Protection Award" to the Sandals Group.

Responding on behalf of his company, Seamus Lynch, chief executive officer of Digicel, expressed gratitude to the JCC, which he said "came on board" to assist the company in its start up operations when it came to Jamaica three years ago.

Mr. Lynch said Digicel, which recently completed successful launches of its mobile service in St. Lucia and St. Vincent, remained committed to making Jamaica the hub of its Caribbean operations.

Karl Wright, VMBS president and chief executive officer, said the Society was fully committed to continue making dreams comes through for many Jamaicans, by providing opportunities for Jamaicans to own property and to achieve upward mobility in a challenging economy.
