WESTERN BUREAU:
AN ENVIRONMENTAL disaster has been averted in Reading, St. James, after an emergency team comprising of environmental officers, the police and representatives of the St. James Parish Disaster Committeee, worked painstakingly to clean a large oil spill.
When The Gleaner team visited the area late on Monday, an emergency team was cleaning up the last signs of the spill by loading oil-soaked sand from storm drains and the sidewalk into a tractor. The impact of the accident was still clearly visible, however, as large oil spots could be seen on the traffic sign posts.
The team used the sand to spread on the road surface to make clean up easier. Sandbags were used to build a barrier to prevent the oil from reaching the sea. Flotation barriers were also put in place by the parish disaster team to prevent the oil from seeping into the sea.
