Performance pay for teachers
published: Wednesday | April 30, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM interested in hearing from the Government the criteria that will be used to decide teachers' pay. If a meaningful and fair system is put in place to assess the performance of teachers, I doubt the hardworking and dedicated teachers of Jamaica will have a problem with such system.

It is of paramount importance that the Ministry of Education addresses the issue of performance pay for teachers. Is there a level playing field with regard to the provision of resources for all secondary high schools?

I hope that performance pay for teachers will lead to a transformation in the Jamaican society. The fact that Government has plans to link teachers' pay to performance, I guess the society will benefit from more accountability on the part of public officials.

Jamaicans will get more than 40 cents in value for every dollar spent by Government. School Boards will be more accountable and the Ministry will start to publish league tables for schools. One of the upgraded high schools will fill the top slot in the league tables, if the 'game' is played fairly.

I am, etc.,
