THE JAMAICA Constabulary Force (JCF) has launched the eighth renewal of its flagship sponsorship drive, the 'Law Enforcement Torch Run' to raise $4 million to send 65 mentally challenged persons to the Special Olympics in Dublin, Ireland, later this year.
Members of the Special Olympics team will be participating in eight events at the international championship comprising football, volleyball, badminton, athletics, swimming and roller-skating.
MILLIONS RAISED LAST YEAR
Last year, the officers raised approximately $3 million for Special Olympics Jamaica from the run and other fundraising activities. So far, the JCF has secured sponsorship from private sector companies Digicel, Tools and Hardware Supplies and Transtel Cable Services. Each Police Division has been given a set target that they will earn by organising fundraising activities.
The bi-annual Law Enforcement Torch Run is a series of relays that are run by members of the JCF. The event begins with Commissioner of Police, Francis Forbes, receiving a lighted Special Olympic torch from an athlete representing Special Olympics Jamaica. The torch will then be passed on to various teams of officers who will run quarter mile relay legs throughout the island, collecting donations along the way.
The event will commence on May 19 at Petcom Service Station, Stony Hill, St. Andrew, and end with the arrival of the Special Olympics Torch at the Police Sports Complex on Lower Elletson Road, Kingston.
