Security guard shot dead by gunman
published: Wednesday | April 30, 2003

A SECURITY guard was shot dead by a lone gunman in a brazen afternoon attack at Savings Expert Supermarket, 85 Molynes Road, Kingston 10, yesterday, who robbed him of his firearm and fled.

The dead security guard has been identified as David McLean, 23, employed by Sledge Security Co. The Gleaner understands that McLean was also a deacon at the Zion Church, Molynes Road.

Reports from the Constabulary Communication Network are that about 2.15 p.m., McLean was at the supermarket when a man with a gun approached him. The gunman demanded money and fired shots which hit the guard before he could respond. The gunman then made off with the security guard's loaded .38 calibre revolver in a waiting silver Honda motor car.

According to a group of residents, who gathered on the scene, the supermarket has had several hold-ups in the past which, they claimed, led to the recent sale of the establishment by the original owner.

A distraught church sister of McLean, "Miss Daphne," lamented that he had visited her at her home where they had coffee just before he left for work about 12 o'clock.

The Half-Way Tree police are investigating the killing.
