THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE INTERNET has brought new opportunities in business, education, recreation and increased social contact by e-mail. The Internet will surely figure as one of the more striking developments of human history. It is a development that is becoming as important to life as the air we breathe, but alas, it is being priced out of the reach of ordinary Jamaicans.
Telephone giant Cable & Wireless continues to run a "has reduced the price" advertisement offering Unlimited Internet Access for a new low price of "just US$34.95 per month". In terms of figures that seems like a low price but when converted to a sliding local dollar it is still too high, especially for non-commercial users.
Other providers are priced considerably below Cable & Wireless' new low rate, even as the company collects on the telephone use element of Internet service.
Cable & Wireless can easily answer us with a comparatively lower price for non-commercial/private Internet user. A suggested price US$20.00 would allow the company to profit from increased sign up.
I am, etc.
