Watchdogs of beauty
published: Wednesday | May 14, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS time for our citizens to accept their true role in being the watchdogs of community beautification and enlightenment. Too often we find garbage piling up at the road side and in dumps not suitable for the purpose and people pass by without any interest in any cleaning up exercise.

There is the talk about we being taxpayers and how much we have paid the State to carry out the task of road cleansing. But it is not likely that we are going to get anywhere with this attitude. In other communities overseas, citizens are the ones who take a much deeper interest in making sure that their surrounds stay sparkling clean.

We need to develop this kind of behaviour around us, which will make for the kind of society we are yearning for and wish to be a part of. Let us get up and be counted in keeping our environment in tiptop shape and stop wrongfully blaming the government for the dirt and grime around us.

I am, etc.,

VALERIE WALTERS (Miss)

Councillor-candidate

Broadgate P.A.

St. Mary
