Thanks to the real Moms
published: Wednesday | May 14, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM writing in response to an article published in The Gleaner on Friday May 9, which named Jamaica as one of the better countries to be a mom. It was quite refreshing to see something positive on the front page of the newspaper.

I must extend my congratulations to our health officials for providing mothers and children with health care good enough to rank us at 28th out of the list of 117 countries. I must also extend my congratulations to the women who have proven themselves worthy of the honour of being called a mother (I am privileged to have such a woman being my mother). We must realise that not every woman who gives birth to a child is qualified to be a mother in every sense of the word. Sure, she conceived and brought to fruition but we all know that it is what she does after the child has been born that concretises the word 'mom'.

Therefore, to all such women, congratulations and thanks for your contribution in making Jamaica a place to be proud of.

I am, etc.,
