Foster aims at national record
published: Monday | June 2, 2003

JAMAICANS BRIGITTE Foster, Asafa Powell and Jermaine Mason were among the winners at the 2003 Barrientos Memorial Games at Havana's Estadio PanAmericano on Saturday.

In form Foster ran a personal best 11.17 seconds to win the women's 100 metres, and Powell completed the sprint sweep for Jamaica when he landed the men's 100 metres.

Mason won the men's high jump at 2.24 metres while Olympic champion Anier Garcia and World Champion Yipsi Moreno also registered wins at the 53rd staging of the Barrientos meet.

Foster, who sped to a 2003 world best and Jamaica national record 12.45 seconds in the 100-metre hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic last weekend in the United States, opted out of the sprint hurdles here and dominated the 100 metres.

She easily topped Roxanna Diaz (11.47) and Misleidis Lazo (11.53).

"Now I just want to stay healthy, continue to run fast and hopefully break my national record again," she told reporters after her win.

World Junior champion Anay Tejeda won the women's 100 hurdles in 13.25 seconds.

Powell, in his season debut, captured the men's 100 metre in 10.36 seconds, with fellow Jamaica Chris Williams, the 2001 World Championship 200-metre silver medallist, seventh in 10.67 seconds.

Mason sustained his fine form this season with a win, adding to triumphs he had at the Brazil Grand Prix and the Consul-General Permit Meet in Martinique.

He won ahead of Cuba's Lizvany Perez, who also cleared 2.24 metres.

"I am glad to compete in the country of Javier Sotomayor, the greatest jumper ever," said Mason, a two-time World Junior Championship medallist.

Garcia won the men's 110-metre hurdles in 13.80 seconds in his season debut, and Moreno was unchallenged in her hammer victory at 74.07 metres.
