Papa San shines on-stage at 'Night of Caribbean Gospel Explosion' in Toronto. - contributed
TORONTO:
IT WAS pure musical joy in Toronto, Canada, recently when Rhema Christian Ministries staged 'Night of Caribbean Gospel Explosion' featuring former dancehall performer Papa San and other gospel performers.
Papa San was definitely the darling of the crowd. The deafening applause he received when he stepped on-stage was a testament to that.
Many in the audience rushed to the front of the stage to get a closer look or perhaps even to touch him. It was reminiscent of his dancehall days when fans would mob him at concerts. The difference was that many of those fans have also changed their lives, and still support him.
During his time on-stage, Papa San was quite entertaining and the audience's reaction to his songs would leave casual onlookers wondering if they were in church or at a party. However it was another way for churchgoers to enjoy themselves in the presence of the Lord.
Many of his songs, including Fly Away Home, had the congregation dancing in the aisle or any space they could find. However, he soon brought some serenity to the event as he ministered to the audience and performed such songs as How Great Thou Art and Your Grace and Mercy. It was Papa San at his religious best.
Pastor McKay, who over the years has developed into one of Toronto's top preachers and gospel artistes, was in excellent form as she ministered to the audience and entertained them through songs. She sang I Will Not Suffer, I Recognised the Voice, I Saw the Blood and Noah.
Trinidadian-born Sherwin Gardner is not well known in Toronto, but after his performance he certainly will be.
Bridget Blucher, who has a clear and powerful voice that commands attention, was also a big hit. I Am Still Here, the title of one of her songs, was also her testimony. She told the audience that it was inspired by those who criticised her and said she would not last.
Making guest appearances were Jamaican-born evangelist Marvia Providence and twin brothers Sons of Thunder.
The show was intended to be a CD release concert for Papa San and Bridget Blucher, however, due to unforeseen circumstances the CDs were not available. Howard Mahoney of Silver Lining Promotion the promoters of the show, are planning to have the CDs in stores as early as possible.
