Punishing mob killers
published: Monday | June 16, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I MUST comment on the recent mob killing of an alleged shopbreaker in St. Elizabeth. This incident is just one too many. It is simply appalling that human beings could set upon an individual and hack him to death in such a brutal fashion. I know that this is not anything to some people as it is all in a day's runnings. However, well-thinking Jamaicans here and abroad are outraged by actions such as these. In this the 21st century, justice should not be sought in such a way and stiff penalties should be meted out to people who commit these barbaric acts in their communities.

Ways must be found to put these people behind bars. The high level of crime and the snail pace of the justice system will cause people to want to resort to alternative means to get justice, but vigilante killings cannot be it. Whatever they do, it must be within the ambits of the law.

When potential visitors see these images they will not be encouraged to come to Jamaica. More people should lend their voices against mob killings. Sitting back in silence and watching our country plunge into barbarism can only spell disaster for all of us.

I am, etc.,
