THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WAS struck by a recent letter about SARS in which the writer mentioned that, she travelled from Canada to Jamaica, and on her arrival at the airport no one (or the Health Department) took any precautions in screening the passengers who arrived off that airplane.
I strongly agree with this writer. I knew of a flight arriving from Canada on another island in the Caribbean, where the passengers were going to embark and then board a cruise ship. Before the 300 passengers and crew got off the airplane, they had to fill out a health declaration form.
Also, when the airplane landed, the passengers could see the motorcade and armed policemen or soldiers who surrounded the airplane. All of them were wearing masks. So you see, they are taking the necessary precautions against SARS and terrorism.
So, Mr. Editor please have someone emphasise to the Jamaican health authorities to do the right thing, and screen every passenger who is arriving from all the countries that have a high number of SARS victims i.e (China, Canada, etc). Because in my opinion, neither Jamaica nor any other Caribbean island can afford to have an outbreak of SARS.
I love my paradise island, Jamaica, and I always wish the best for her and its citizens. May God continue to shed his blessings on our country and its people.
I am, etc.,
