Caring for the handicapped

THE EDITOR, Sir:
SATURDAY JUNE 28, 2003 I visited a home that cares for variously challenged children and have since been grappling with this question, "are the lives of these children the worse for their handicap or ours?"
However, as I pondered this question on my way back to my 'well appointed' home, it occurred to me that I might not be so outraged were their home similarly well appointed as mine and their various needs duly provided for as my child's.
This got me thinking, are these children's condition an indication of the neglect of God or our neglect? The Bible says wo/man were created in the image and likeness of God, should we not therefore be like God, kind, caring etc.
Just think! Were these homes properly equipped, maintained, staffed and given adequate resources to ensure the satisfaction of their challenged occupants' needs, would their lives not be eminently more pleasant. It follows therefore that their condition is not as a result of their various challenges but ours we the 'able' are 'charitably challenged'. Could not the above condition be achieved easily if we all gave even two per cent of our salaries to the proper running of these homes? Think about it!
