Netball champions arrive
published: Wednesday | July 9, 2003

A STORM is brewing but world netball champions Australia and New Zealand are prepared to be hit blown away even, but that will depend on how well they withstand the blast.

Weather experts have predicted that Tropical Storm Claudette will move close to the island but the Pacific teams do not see her as a threat. The real threat is Jamaica, and maybe England, South Africa and Cook Island to name a few others.

"We're ready. We know what's coming but we're ready," said Aussie coach Jill McIntosh.

The two top-rated teams were among the 11 international competitors who arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport yesterday for the Cable & Wireless World Netball Championship that will be held at the National Arena and the new Indoor Sports Centre simultaneously from July 10-20.

Jamaica is currently ranked fourth and will be looking to improve its position in this Championship. Their best finish at such an event was third in 1991.

The seven remaining teams including South Africa and the United States arrive periodically today.

Look out for the special World Netball Championship supplement in tomorrow's Gleaner.
