CSA to host workshop on maritime goods
published: Tuesday | July 15, 2003

THE CARIBBEAN Shipping Association (CSA) is to convene a workshop on 'Basic International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) - Amendment 31' from July 28-30, 2003 at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston, Jamaica. The CSA has organised the forum against the background that the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that 'Hazmat Employees' receive recurrent training at least once every three years. This means that personnel who handle and prepare Hazardous Materials for transportation by sea may need recurrent training whenever significant amendments in the IMDG Code affect the performance of a hazardous material function. These workers include employees of water carriers and associated industries such as ports, terminals, shipping agents, freight forwarders and Non-vessel Operating Common Carriers (NVOCCs). The IMDG Code is subject to revision through amendments, which are published by the International Maritime Organisation every two years.

For further information, contact the CSA Secretariat at 923-3491/2 or visit the website at www.caribbeanshipping.org.

The three-day workshop is to address areas of IMDG instruction including:

format of the IMDG Code,

The Nine Hazard Classes of Dangerous Goods,

Using the Dangerous Goods List,

the Requirements for Shippers and Craters/Container Packing,

General Packaging Requirements,

UN Specification Packaging Requirements,

Marking, Labelling and Placarding;

Dangerous Goods Cargo Manifest Documentation, among others.
