More bloodshed in East Kingston
published: Saturday | July 19, 2003

A member of the Vineyard Town CIB fingerprint an unidentified body that was found with gunshot wounds at the intersection of Robert and First Avenues, East Kingston, yesterday.

THE LANKY body of an unidentified man, clad in a blue shorts and bleeding profusely in the midday sun, at the intersection of First and Robert avenues in Vineyard Town, East Kingston, yesterday became the latest reminder that the violence which has gripped East Kingston for the past few weeks is not over.

There were no signs of remorse in the area. The deceased was just another victim of a bloody, political feud between supporters of the People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). The bloodshed and killing began exactly a month ago and, since then, at least 11 persons have been shot and killed by gun-toting criminals.

Reports are that the unidentified man was attacked by two men, immediately after he emerged from a yard near the intersection. He was shot in the head twice and once in the lower back. It is alleged that his death might have been a reprisal for a man who was shot and killed by gunmen on Robert Avenue last Saturday.

Yesterday's killing occurred less than 300 metres from the Vineyard Town Police Station. The killing also took place close to where scores of police and soldiers were conducting an operation in a nearby gully.

One policeman said his patrol was a block away when they heard the gunshots. By the time they rushed to the scene, the killers had already fled the area.

According to the residents, they heard shots being fired and later discovered the deceased in a pool of blood.

A make-shift command post has been put in place at 63 Mountain View Avenue to address the problem of political violence in the area.
