St Catherine ready for Portland
published: Saturday | July 19, 2003

ST. CATHERINE CC will start the defence of their All-Island Capital & Credit Merchant Bank limited-over cricket crown when they travel to Folly Oval to take on Senior League team Portland in one of eight matches down to play today, starting at 10:00 a.m.

They will not find things easy this time around as ace West Indies pacer Jermaine Lawson is nursing a back injury and Danza Hyatt is at the Shell/West Indies cricket academy in Grenada.

St. Catherine will find Group C, which includes St. Elizabeth and Lucas, extremely competitive.

The match of the day should be between hosts Melbourne and Westmoreland at Derrymore Road. With talented players such as Marlon Samuels, Donovan Pagon, Llewellyn Meggs, Carlton Baugh, Nikita Miller, Roman Hutchinson and Robert Samuels on show for the home team and veteran Cleveland Davidson, Vinard Woolcock, Dwayne Ewart and Evon McInnis to take the field for Westmoreland, a battle royal is expected.

In other first-round matches, St. Ann meet St. James at Kaiser Sports Club, Jamaica Defence Force tackle Trelawny at Up Park Camp (Group A); St. Catherine Parish face Kensington at Port Esquivel, Kingston travel to Elletson Road to take on Police (Group B); Lucas host St. Thomas at Nelson Oval (Group C) and Clarendon go up against Manchester at JAMALCO.
