Very unfair visa policy
published: Wednesday | July 23, 2003

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE on the matter of obtaining entry to the United States.

For Jamaicans, a visa is a must, but for entry to Jamaica for an American, they just need to have been 'born' in the USA. I find this to be unfair. The embassy of the US emphasises the need to ensure that you have more than enough 'ties' and even then, some of us are not good enough to put foot on their soil.

Yet Americans just need to wake up and have Jamaica on their minds and they are here.

Is there anything the Government of Jamaica can do to help make it easier for us to visit the USA? We need this opportunity to be able to bring in foreign currency into the country.

A US convict is free to take a flight to Jamaica yet a true and sincere pastor or student or hopeful parent has to take his or her life story and still be turned down. Please, whoever is in charge, give us a chance even to prove ourselves.

I am, etc.,

J.M.

St. Ann
