Rio coming with top players, says Torres
published: Wednesday | July 23, 2003

By Nodley Wright, Staff Reporter

CARLOS ALBERTO Torres, coach of the Rio de Janeiro state team which goes up against the Reggae Boyz at the National Stadium on Sunday, is promising Jamaica a football treat.

"We will bring a good team. We represent the region of Rio de Janeiro and we will play with the logo of the Rio Football Federation on our shirts," Torres told The Gleaner at the weekend.

"I give you my word that the Jamaican people will have the chance to see a good team and a good game," added the man who captained the Brazilian team which lifted the World Cup in 1970.

In his team, Torres said, will be a nice blend of experience and youth. Besides World Cup veteran Bebeto, other experienced players will include goalkeeper Wagner who was a part of the 1998 World Cup squad.

Youngsters will include central defender Jorge Luis and Bruno Carvalho "who was a champion of the world in Under-20s just a few years ago".

"We have been practising here in Rio de Janeiro for some time and we will arrive in Jamaica four days before the game to continue training," Torres said of his team which arrives in the island at midday today.

While expressing confidence in his players, Torres was very respectful of the Jamaican team. "I know the Jamaican team. I was in Jamaica last December with Violette of Haiti. We drew that game 0-0," said Torres who indicated that he will take his best 18 players to Jamaica.

"We respect Jamaica because we know the players but I hope to win. They are very good. But to have the chance to go to Jamaica to play against the national team is a big honour for us."
