All set for Lucea Regatta
published: Thursday | July 31, 2003

By Claudia Gardner, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

WITH ALL the major preparations now over, it will be all systems go tomorrow (Emancipation Day), in Hanover, with the third renewal of the Lucea Cross the Harbour Swim and Regatta, which is once again being staged by the Hanover Chamber of Commerce.

According to President of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, Ryan Morrison, he is expecting that this year's staging will attract thousands of locals, expatriates and international visitors to Lucea for what promises to be an exciting day of watersport activities. He also indicated that last year's event was extremely successful with over 6000 persons in attendance.

"The defending cross the harbour champion Timothy Wong will be back to defend his title and the overall response from other potential competitors has been gratifying," Mr Morrison told The Gleaner earlier this week.

"We have had entries coming from swimmers across the island, via our Web site and by mail as many persons are hoping to cop the $40,000.00 championship prize."

Mr. Morrison also indicated that the quality of entertainment activities would be heightened and diversified. "In addition to the race, it will be a day of rich entertainment in Lucea. We will have activities such as kayak and canoe racing, jet-ski rides, para-sailing and a fashion show with glass bottomed boat and bounce-about for the children," he said.

Mr. Morrison said that while the level of sponsorship from companies within Hanover was somewhat disappointing, he was pleased to note that once again the Hanover Parish Council had lent its full support to the staging of the event. He also indicated that the proceeds from the event would be channelled into operating the new Chamber of Commerce office in the town.
