Archbishop Samuel Carter Foundation launched
published: Monday | August 4, 2003

By Kevin Clarke, Gleaner Writer

PROFESSOR JOSEPH Woolcock's dream came true on Thursday at the Holy Cross Church, where a celebrated mass was held to establish the Archbishop Samuel E. Carter Foundation, Fellowships and Medallion.

The Professor, a close friend of the late Archbishop of Kingston, is the architect of the Foundation. When asked why he felt the need to create the Foundation, he said: "Love for him. He touched my life deeply."

According to Professor Woolcock, the Foundation was designed to ensure that the life and good works of the Archbishop will be remembered. He said that two graduate fellowships will be awarded annually and will be tenable at the University of the West Indies (UWI), the University of Technology (UTech) and any other fully accredited institution of higher education in the English-speaking Caribbean in appropriate fields of studies.

CRITERIA

He disclosed further that applicants to these awards would have to meet a set of criteria that were rooted in the core values of the Archbishop's life. They will also have to be members of the Christian community holding membership in the Caribbean Conference of Churches and the Jamaica Council of Churches.

Upon receiving the Fellowship, each awardee will also receive the Samuel Carter Medallion which will symbolise excellence. He further stated that the fund will start with $1.2 million that was donated.

Professor Woolcock was the presenter at the mass which was held in commemoration of Archbishop Carter's 84th birthday. The lively ceremony was attended by a number of the Archbishop's former parishioners and friends. Special guests at the launch were the Archbishops from Nassau, The Bahamas, and Antigua as well as Archbishop of Kingston Rev. Edgerton Clarke.
